This limited edition serigraph is part of a series titled ‘The Ahmedabad Serigraphs’ which consist of 33 serigraphs done by 33 different artists each serigraph is a window to the city, as seen from the eyes of the artist, each of who has presented a central idea of Ahmedabad as testimony of their feeling for the city.
This work is a Kaleidoscope of different time periods and eras that Ahmedabad has evolved through. The pale backdrop of the carvings of the Sidi Saiyyed Jali, highlights different vibrant fragments of the foreground. The Jali was built in the rule of the Gujarat Sultanate in 1573 and represents city’s glory and grandeur. It also remains as a constant amidst the evolution that this city has seen. The fragment on left is a glimpse of one of the initial drafts of the maps of Ahmedabad, circa mid 19th century, and the highlighted blue stream is the Sabarmati river. The orange coloured fragment shows the heritage structures, namely Sidi Bashir Mosque, Teen Darwaza, Pol house carvings, depicting period of the Sultanate rule to the invasion of the Mughals. The fragment in blue depicts the period of the British rule and early post-independence that is 19th - 20th century. The elements in this fragment are namely Sabarmati Ashram and Gandhi’s Charkha, Patang Hotel and Amdavad ni Gufa, latter two built in the late 20th century.
