This limited edition serigraph is part of a series titled ‘The Ahmedabad Serigraphs’ which consist of 33 serigraphs done by 33 different artists each serigraph is a window to the city, as seen from the eyes of the artist, each of who has presented a central idea of Ahmedabad as testimony of their feeling for the city.
Coinciding spirituality and heritage, ’Mannat’ shows the iconic stone carved jali of Sarkhej Roza, a famous heritage mosque of Ahmedabad. Splashes of vermilion red and ochre yellow give the work a very Indian vibe. The threads depict the vermilion threads used by Indians to religiously tie around their wrists, around the trunks of trees, and in this case around the carvings of this jali for betterment and for completion of unfulfilled dreams. It stands testament to all sorts of wishes. The jaIi here is a symbol of protection, growth and life and it holds all these bindings on its latticework. “The act of tying threads is usually seen amongst Hindus. When I visited Roza, I was very surprised to see Muslims tie threads over the latticework of the jali. I then realized that this is more on the grounds of beliefs and faith, rather than religion.”
